Ultimately, what it comes down to is two words: scenario planning. While we can never know exactly what’s coming, one way to set up your business (and your finances) for success is to plan for multiple scenarios. And, more importantly, ensure that you’re managing the business against those scenario plans on a monthly basis so that there’s plenty of time to adjust or pivot if conditions change.
To help your business stay resilient and successful through any scenario—ranging from high growth, business-as-usual, or even apocalyptic, worst-case scenarios—you’ll want to make sure your teams are armed with the tools and resources they need to plan through it all. Static budgets are just that: static. Deviations will always occur, no matter the scenario. Make sure your organization is performing a budget vs. actuals analysis (or variance analysis) on a monthly basis. With an iterative approach, you can improve your budget accuracy and become better equipped for quick course correction.
